Hi everyone!
Today I would like to share with you a vocabulary game with a difference. This very special resource allows you to test and develop your vocabulary skills, while at the same time doing something good for the world. Welcome to Free Rice – a website which for every answer your get right donates 10 grains of rice through the World Food Programme – so the more you play, the more rice you earn, the more you help others, and the more you improve your English! Every one is a winner!
Since the beginning of the Free Rice project and the launch of the Free Rice vocabulary game in 2007, thousands of players have fed millions of people – that is proof enough that with just something small that you do, you can make a big difference.
Just a little bit of background information – in countries where rice is a staple part of the diet, on average, the World Food Programme provides approximately 400 grams of rice per person, per day.
So, playing the Free Rice game really does make a difference. With each game you are helping the fight against hunger.
Just visit the website and begin practising and donating – why not visit every day!
So, how does it work? When you start the game, you will see a word with four possible meanings underneath – all you need to do is choose the meaning which you believe most closely matches the original word, and there you have it… just keep reading and selecting the most appropriate word.
It is difficult? Not really because Free Rice will automatically adjust to your level – the game will begin by presenting you with questions of increasing difficulty, and then, based on your answers, it will determine your approximate starting level. Don’t worry if you get a question wrong, because the next question will be a little easier, and a few turns later, the same question will be repeated again so that you have a second chance at getting it correct. Also, if you get three questions in a row right, then you will automatically progress to a higher harder level – and there are 60 levels with over 12,000 words in total, so the game should keep you busy busy busy for many years to come! (FYI: it is rare for native speakers to get above level 50 – so keep practising!)
What are the topic areas? Well, the vocabulary you are tested on is varied, but you can also choose to be tested on a specific area such as maths, science, or geography – just click on the subjects link and choose an area which you are interested in, or play randomly and be surprised by your knowledge.
Anyway, I hope that you love Free Rice as much as I do and that you feel great about learning and doing something good for the world at the same time. Enjoy – and spread the word!
:) Nicole
