Hi everyone!
Today I would like to provide you with several links to free online newspapers which will keep you nice and busy with lots of reading practice over the coming weeks. I will go into more detail about my favourite links in future posts, today’s post is a simple introduction so that you can become more familiar with what is available for you to use for free on the world wide web.
The below English language newspapers are all recommended by me – they are all written at a high level of English and will challenge you in the development of your reading comprehension skills. You will also be exposed to a wonderful range of vocabulary on a number of important topic areas – please take note of any new words (put them in your personal dictionary) and challenge yourself to use them – you can write the new words in sentences, you can write a summary of each article you read trying to include the new words, you can even speak to someone about the article you read and the issues that were raised. Here are my recommendations:
SOME GREAT ONLINE NEWSPAPERS:
–Sydney Morning Herald (Australia)
–Daily Telegraph (Australia)
–The Australian (Australia)
–The Age (Australia)
–Los Angeles Times (USA)
–New York Times (USA)
–USA Today (USA)
–Washington Post (USA)
–The Guardian (UK)
–The Independent (UK)
–The Observer (UK)
–The Times (UK)
In future posts I will speak about some of the above newspapers and give you ideas of how to use them for your daily language practice, but at this stage, all I recommend is that you read at least 1-2 articles per day and that you select a range of different topics (don’t focus on just the topic areas you are interested in – challenge yourself to also read about less familiar and less interesting topics so that you can build a wider range of vocabulary and can have a broader understanding of what you read).
For those of you preparing for an English test (such as the IELTS or the Cambridge) it is essential that you build a deep general knowledge of the world – the only way to do this is by reading about the world every day and by keeping up to date with global developments. Get into the habit of daily reading now so that as you get closer to your exam, reading and understanding is a lot easier and you have already formed the daily habit of reading.
If you have any other great online newspapers which you recommend (English only please!), please let me know and I will add them to the above list. Happy reading to all of you and thank you for reading today’s post.
:) Nicole
